COURSE DETAILS

UCAS course code A200, institution code N21

5 year full time course (1st year entry); a highly integrated PBL-based preventative-orientated programme with early clinical experience

Teaching

Throughout the 5 year teaching programme, emphasis is placed on the scientific basis of dentistry and preventative dentistry. Problem-based learning (PBL) plays at integral role in the first few years of the BDS programme, in which students work together in small groups to discuss case scenarios and problem solve. This method of self-directed learning aids students’ learning by developing their enquiring approach and responsibility for their own learning. PBL is supported by other teaching methods such as lectures.

Course topics

During the first year, students are introduced to the BDS programme and will cover various modules including the PBL-based basic medical sciences module which is taken in conjunction with first year medical students. Other modules include: introduction to oral health and preventative dentistry, introduction to operative dentistry and communication skills – again taken jointly with first year medical students.

In year 2, modules covered include the PBL-based oral sciences and medicine course which involves plenaries, clinicopathological conferences (CPCs), human anatomy course and personal study. Students will also be introduced to clinical practice, and cover modules such as prosthodontics, preventative dentistry, and behavioural sciences (clinical psychology and primary care).

During years 3 and 4, students will continue their PBL course in oral sciences and medicine with greater emphasis on clinical medicine. Other modules covered include: clinical dental practice; oral and maxillofacial surgery, preventative dentistry, basic medical science, and sedation for dentistry.

During the final year, students will cover the following modules: clinical dental practice, oral pathology, oral diseases, preventative dentistry, law and ethics, vocational training and career development. They will also carry out independent coursework in the form of written case reports and set essays.

Clinical experience

Students will gain the majority of their clinical experience treating patients in various clinics of the Dental Hospital under close supervision.

Student will begin practical dental operative training in year 1 and will begin treating patients in year 2 in the restorative department.

In years 3 and 4 students will spend three to four days per week gaining clinical experience in restorative dentistry in topics such as conservation, periodontology, prosthodontics, dental materials science, preventative dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and radiology.

In either year 4 or 5, students will spend one day a week treating patients within the community dental services and general dental practices in Merseyside, Cheshire and East Lancashire as part of the Outreach programme.

In year 5, students will continue their clinical dental practice, and cover topics such as advanced operative skills, close support dentistry and sedation for dentistry. Students will spend time at clinical attachments at the Maxillofacial Unit in University Hospitals Aintree and at the Accident and Emergency Department in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. There are also attachments at the oral pathology laboratory, and oral diagnosis attachments to the Liverpool University Dental Hospital Examinations Department.

Special features

Students will have the opportunity for elective study at the end of year 4 in which students undertake a research project of their choice, which may take place abroad, after which an elective report will need to be carried out with a presentation early in year 5.

A fast-track four year BDS (A201) programme runs at the Liverpool School of Dental Sciences for graduates with a minimum 2:1 biomedically-related degree, on which students will follow the same final three years of the five year BDS A200 programme, with the first year building on the graduate’s knowledge. Students will also be assessed throughout the programme with other methods of assessment such as Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Clinical work is continually assessed and graded using the competence grading system.
